Our History
Chapman Removals and Storage was founded by Henry Chapman in 1890, although the family’s trade in furniture removals dates back much further than this. William Chapman, Henry’s Father ventured into haulage with his four sons in 1870.
Henry started the business with one horse drawn pantechnicon.
Henry’s strong business acumen and commitment to investing his profits back into the business paid off. Soon the business had an entire fleet of horse drawn pantechnicons and four lift vans all operating from his two Cardiff premises, one on Crwys Road and one on Fanny Street in Cathays.
By 1926 Henry had gained ample capital in the business allowing him to build a 2400 sq. ft warehouse on Fanny Street.
1926 also brought Henry’s son Alfred into the business. Alfred was a Wheelwright by trade and as a result did the companies body building.
The 1930’s brought the introduction of motorised vehicles. But Henry never lost his love of horses and was a regular at local horse shows having won multiple rosettes.

The 1940’s brought international moves which were also offered to customers. Henry was keen to promote these achievements, they were frequently advertised on the sides of our vehicles.
Sadly by 1947 founder Henry Chapman died. He was succeeded by his son Alfred who took over the family business and grew the company to one of the biggest removal companies in South Wales.
In the 1950’s Alfred Chapman secured a contract with the American Consulate in Cardiff to become its packing agent of choice. This continued as a very happy relationship until 1963, only ending when the Consulate closed. However has a token of appreciation for all Alfred’s hard work he was awarded with a special plaque presented by the Vice Consule. A proud moment for Alfred and the rest of the company.
In the 1970’s Alfred Chapman took a step back and allowed his own sons, Henry and Mathew Chapman, take over managerial control of the business.
The business also moved to its new premises on Colchester Avenue Estate.
In 1980’s Henry’s son Stephen and Mathew’s daughter Sharon also took up positions within the business, making them the forth generation of the Chapman family to work within the business.
In the 1990’s both Mathew and Henry Chapman retire from the business.
Our bright orange vans were regulars on the roads of South Wales.
In the 00’s we were pleased to introduce and roll out the new Chapman Removals and Storage Livery across our entire fleet of vehicles.
In 2000 Keith Domican was appointed our Business Manager. Keith is still leading the Chapman team today.
